                     Heritage  -  The French Way

Above is the advertisement flyer for the annual  Fete des Doris en Vallee de la Rance, in other words a gathering of the traditional French dories on the River Rance, which took place on 27th and 28th August 2011, and the two day rally to celebrate the French Dory, a boat used by fishermen all round the coast, and extensively in the days of the cod fishing off Newfoundland.

The craft would row from Plouer down the Rance to La Richardais (close to the Barrage), crisscrossing the river a number of times with festivities and refreshment at each stop!

The first morning saw the craft cross from Plouer to Mordreuc then on to Port St Jean (just under the Pont St. Hubert bridge), then onwards under the two road bridges to Vigneux for lunch. The afternoon saw the fleet move across the river to Langrolay (Le Roue), then onwards to Le Minihic (Garel) , then across the river again to finish at Saint Suliac.

Sunday the fleet left from Le Vallion (St. Jouan-des-Guerets) and went round the corner to call at Quelmer, before again crossing the river to Montmarin, and then the final leg to  La Richardais, where a lunch was held.

The event was due to leave Plouer slipway at 10:00, and on making my way down, one was confronted with all types of vehicle towing trailers on which was a traditional French Dory.

There were the usual kisses and hugs as long lost friends greeted each other and helped launch their craft. There were those with flowing locks ( and I don’t mean the females)

those with long beards, those in traditional costume, all there to enjoy their rally.

All had to register and pay their dues, then to the breakfast table where croissants, pastries and coffee were served, while to keep everyone in good sprits the Les Cap Horniers de la Rance et la Parbatte sang traditional sea shanties.

This was heritage at its best, the boats kept on coming, not just by road but being rowed in from around the Rance, and as start time approached craft were moored two to three deep around the slipway and the little quay. As with anything French the rally did not start on time, which was a good thing as the late comers were still arriving, and when the klaxon sounded at 10:30 and things got underway, boats were still being put into the water.

Not only was it a fantastic sight to see so many boats gathered together, it was also marvellous to see them set off and row to their next port of refreshment!

In addition to the dories, the Plouer ten oared gig TOLERANCE also took part, while the Saint Suliac lifeboat acted as one of the guard boats and there were a number of pleasure boats which also followed the event.

Heritage at it’s best!
