JERSEY PILOTS             



Company of Town Pilots were taken over by the Harbours  Department of the States of Jersey on 1st January 2005.



MARIE      


1923 3 May. Application made to the Harbour Master for a passenger licence, vessel has a

          paraffin engine.

1923 26 July. Licence approved

1939  In service pre War ?

1954 April.  Sold to owners at Rozel, Jersey. About six years later vessel lost on the rocks

                    close to the harbour.

RIVAL (I)  after being re-engined, having a new wheelhouse and      alterations to her rig, in early 1951 running trials on May 3rd. She is towing the boarding boat used to put pilots on/off vessels.                                       300wa 51.3k

RIVAL in her final form with the mizzen sail and boom having been removed, and the vessel  no longer towing a boarding boat, as pilots were transferred directly to the merchant ship, hence the number of rubber tyres along the hull.

LA ROSIERE                              1963 - 1966



1963 28 August. Vessel launched.        

       12 September ? Trials

       19 Sept trials..  J.E.P. States named by Mrs Langlois at Jean Bellot’s yard                                in Cherbourg.

        20 September. Arrives Jersey, JEP states Launched 12 Sept, trials


1966 16 January. Vessel hit rocks at La Corbiere at 15:42hrs, and became a t

                          total loss.

Built John Banff & Son in Scotland  1963

Dimensions  40’  x  14’3”  x  5’4”draft   26 tons

Engine  Gardner diesel.



1966 18 February. Pilots have acquired vessel from Mr. D. Jones, Llandudno.

1966 March 12. Vessel arrived in Jersey from Guernsey.

1966 29 March. Vessel went out on trials having been fitted out for pilot

                     service including new diesel generator, batteries and radar.

L’ESPERANCE                ON 167345          


Builder: Groves & Gutteridge, IoW Boat Year: 1940

Length: 35ft 6ins Beam: 10ft 3ins Draft: 2ft 3.5ins

Displacement: 6 tons

Engine: 5hp Weyburn petrol



1939 Built as R.N.L.B. LUCY LAVERS registered in London 234/1939, and

               stationed at

1968 8 November.  Pilots have bought vessel and will renamed her

                L’ESPERANCE.

1969 16 January. Bill of sale from R.N.L.I. To the Pilots.


1986          Bought by Dive & Ski Club of St. Helier ( Mike Gibson) and and reverted                  to the name LUCY LAVERS, spending much time at Sark.

1997         Retired and stripped. Hull transferred to the Dunkirk Little Ships                 Restoration Trust, who arranged transport to Simon Evans boat yard at                 Sens in France.  

2008 14 May. Vessel is going to the East Coast to be restored by Graeme Peart.

2010 1 July. Vessel spotted at Stiffkey Norfolk Boat Yard

RIVAL (II)


1979 6 August. Arrived in Jersey.

          Joined L’ESPERANCE ex Lifeboat.  

2010 December. Re-launched after major overhaul, including new engines.

          The orange paintwork was painted yellow, and she received the

          Coastguard logo.

2016 October. Fitted with 3D depth sounding equipment costing £240,000,

          which uses a uses leg attached to the side of the vessel.
